I am thrilled to join MVP Health Care with their Generation Go program. When I had the opportunity to ask the Field Marketing Team at MVP to describe this program, they simply asked me to come and see! I was invited with the boys to a sports clinic with the Lacrosse Master Gary Gait.
MVP Health Care believes that all kids have the power to make healthy decisions…and that’s why they created MVP Generation Go. I hope you don’t think that MVP Generation Go is all celery sticks and sit-ups (nothing against celery sticks and sit-ups). It’s about building confidence. It’s about doing what’s good for your body. It’s about balancing school, play and fitness. It’s about listening to parents, teachers and coaches. But mostly, it’s about having fun! Simply put, we are dedicated to helping families get up, out and active…and live well
So to make this experience more exciting, we’ve invited a group of top mom bloggers from the Northeast to become MVP Generation Go Ambassadors. They will share their personal stories about healthy living in their families. You know what that means right? We’re going to have a blast! Are you ready?
Let’s jump right into Week 1. The topic of the week will be “Meal Planning” – We all know the benefits of making a weekly meal plan. It helps us save money, keep a healthier nutrition balance and save tons of time. I’m curious to know if you have a weekly/monthly menu. Let’s also discover together all the resources out there and the blogs that focus on meal planning.
The way we do it in our family is by assigning each kid to a day of the week (you can do that in a big family). As the meal leader, he
gets to plan the menu for that day. You can’t imagine how much this strategy has helped me. We have some ground rules. They must use the Pyramid Tracker tool (if you haven’t used it, you must) and they have to respect a budget. The entire family takes ownership of our health, finances and time management through this process.
The best part is to see the kids so engaged in learning about nutritional values. As an incentive, we pay the kids 5 cents for every coupon they find at our local store’s newsletter or the penny saver as long as the coupon is relevant to our menu of the week. They also get extra points for keeping a healthy balance by including all the food groups. They love this exercise. The coupon hunting, the cutting, the matching with the meal plan, the payment. I must admit that the most exciting part comes with the sound of dropping the 5 cents into their piggy bag. If you have kids, you know what I mean.
This week will be a journey of discovery! Keep an eye on the MVP Generation Go Facebook fan page every day to find out who the ambassador of the day will be. We’ll be using the #GenGo hashtag on Twitter. Needless to say, don’t forget to share some love by liking the new page and following @MVPGenerationGo – I promise the best tips to keep your family healthy in a fun and engaging way. HELLO! this will be done by real moms, so it must be good. Right?

This sounds so fun! I’m always down for meal planning… maybe I’ll find something to share on KidsFunKitchen! What a fun project!
We plan our meals weekly. To ensure a healthy balance, I designate a day to each food group. For example Mondays are red meat, Tuesdays and Thursdays are white meat, Fridays are fish, Saturdays are sandwich (since my kids do many sports that day) and Sundays are left overs.
We don’t plan our meals. I just go to the supermarket and refill automatically whatever is missing. That gives me an opportunity to be flexible with coupons and sales. I guess that’s bad. But now reading all these tips I might get excited about it.
Coupons and sales are great! Definitely saves money.
Since I’m pregnant, I try to add as many fruit portions as possible to keep down my hunger and anxiety. I just discovered the menu Monday blog hop and love it. Thank you for sharing. Generation Go sounds like an amazing project.
I plan my meals on Sunday for the whole week. I am big on leftovers but I try to change meals up by doing different vegetables and side dishes with the entree.
I have to always plan out dinners and write a list so you I forget anything. The way I get paid I can only go every two weeks so I have all the dinners (and at least an idea about breakfast, lunch and snacks) planned out that way I know all the ingredients, sides and whatnot I’ll need. I also buy certain things in bulk, like chicken, that I can just freeze and use when needed.
Planning rocks – and I agree, it definitely helps you to not forget anything to make more trips to the grocery store which can be a pain if you’ve got 2 young kids!
My best meal planning tip is to let everyone help plan the meals. That way I am sure to make things that my kids and husband want! I always do as much of my prep work for the week that I can on Sundays. And I like bake mufins and breads for fast homemade meals in the mornings. I use boxed muffin mix but always add a banana or a diced apple or some other type of fruit to add some extra vitamens!
I plan our menus based upon a) what is in the freezer/ pantry b) what is on sale and c) what we feel like eating! As the Mom of a child with special needs and food sensitivities/ issues this can be challenging. I tend to do a general monthly plan and then a specific weekly plan that changes as needed to reflect sales.
I can imagine it might be quite difficult creating meals based on a child who has special needs and food issues!
I plan our dinners on a notepad that’s separated by day of the week. Seeing each meal and sides written out helps me fill in the gaps nutritionally. Then I transfer those meals to a single grocery list.
I love utilizing whole chickens-they can feed my family of 3 for a few days! Fajitas, soup, a casserole…
Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is the Generation Go program?

Hmm… I tend not to plan meals – more like what is on special that week/fortnight. I would be willing to try fixed meals though, so I’ll give it a shot next week!
So what’s your meal plan for the week?
Awesome, thanks for letting me know about the giveaway!
Love this and your giveaways!
We plan our meals by the week so everything is fresh. I often work late nights so I use the slow cooker quite a bit too.

What a wonderful idea!
Don’t forget foods that are high in fibre – they stave off hunger!
Liked Generation Go on FB!
I like to create several dishes that I can enjoy throughout the week mix ‘n match style!
Every day in each week is the same – Leftovers on Sunday, chicken on Monday, ground beef on Tuesday, pasta on Wednesday, sandwiches on Thursday, fish on Friday and family cooking on Saturday.
What an interesting post! I wish I had some great meal planning tips to share but my current planning consists of sitting down once a week and deciding what to have for dinner each day. Then I write up a grocery list of the items I need. So far it works well and I’ve had a varied menu each week, especially now that our farmer’s market is open. Thanks!

If I am pressed for time at dinner time, I make sure to do a meal in the crock pot that day.
I always try to plan out meals by the week and I shop during store sales and match coupons and visit sites with great deals on how to match up during sales and I always try to keep plenty of hamburger on hand because there is so much you can do with it
