With great trepidation, I watched my son lose his fencing match. It was an unexpected loss against a younger competitor, where before he had been undefeated, and it was the kind of loss that could have resulted in crying jags, gnashing of teeth, and hours – nay, days – of deep depression.
Instead, I saw my son thank the victor for a good match, and proceed to return to the bleachers to watch the rest of the tournament. Not even a furrowed brow, or frown to mar his face. Only the perceptive eye of a mother could detect his disappointment. He shook off the loss, and went on to cheer the rest of the team, later going on to enjoy a beautiful spring day with his buddy.
He made me proud, not by placing third in the tournament, but by being such a gracious loser.
